The Vision Frame: 5 Questions Every Church Must Answer

What Is the Vision Frame?

The Vision Frame is a church vision framework built from years of hands-on vision consulting by Will Mancini, author of Church Unique, God Dreams, and Future Church. It has helped over 40,000 church teams worldwide gain clarity on their God-given direction.

At its heart, the Vision Frame addresses the five irreducible questions every church leadership team must answer to move from confusion to clarity. It’s the foundation of our Vision Clarity work at RunFree.Co, and the engine behind the six modules of the Pivvot Process.

The Five Irreducible Questions

Originally introduced in 2011 through the book Church Unique, the Vision Frame continues to help churches articulate what makes them unique. It centers on five questions that every church must answer together:

  1. Mission: What are we doing? Your mission is the rallying cry that defines your core activity.
  2. Values: Why are we doing it? Your values are the shared convictions that guide how you operate.
  3. Strategy: How are we doing it? Your strategy is the process that moves people toward maturity.
  4. Measures: When are we successful? Your measures are the metrics that define real progress.
  5. Vision Proper: Where is God taking us? Your vision proper is the clear picture of your anticipated future.

Why the Vision Frame Works

Most churches struggle with vision because they’re trying to answer too many questions, or not enough. The Vision Frame provides a framework that’s complete but manageable – enough structure to create clarity, simple enough to fit on one page.

When a leadership team works through these five questions together, something powerful happens. Alignment emerges. Decisions get easier. Ministry focus sharpens. The vision stops living in one person’s head and starts living in the whole team’s language.

What Churches Gain from the Vision Frame

Churches that have implemented the Vision Frame report measurable shifts in how they lead:

  • Clearer communication with their congregation from the stage and in small groups
  • Faster decision-making in leadership and elder meetings
  • Better alignment across ministry teams and campuses
  • More effective onboarding of new staff, elders, and volunteers
  • Sharper disciple-making strategy instead of program stacking

Who the Vision Frame Is For

The Vision Frame is built for any leadership team that needs shared language and shared direction, including:

  • Lead and senior pastors trying to re-focus a drifting church
  • Executive pastors aligning multiple ministries and campuses
  • Church planters laying a strong foundation from the start
  • Elder teams and boards in a strategic planning season
  • Denominational and network leaders equipping the churches they serve
